Spalding was originally called Halifax, and under the latter name was founded in 1875 by a colony of Irish Catholics. It was renamed in 1881 in honor of bishop John Lancaster Spalding. The town was incorporated in 1898, becoming an organized community.
Spalding is the home of Chuck, Jim, and Tompall Glaser of Tompall and the Glaser Brothers. It is also the birthplace of former actress Crystal Carson and former NFL player Gene Cronin.
